Abstract
This study sought to examine how preschool children¡¯s smartphone dependency is affected by their own mothers' smartphone dependency, parenting self-efficacy, and parenting behaviors. The major findings of this study are as follows. Children¡¯s smartphone dependency was positively correlated with their mothers¡¯ own smartphone dependency and negatively correlated with their mothers¡¯ parenting self-efficacy. In addition, children¡¯s smartphone dependency was negatively correlated with their mothers¡¯ warmth¡¤encouragement and limit setting while it was positively correlated with overprotection¡¤permissiveness. It was also found that when the mothers¡¯ smartphone dependency, which was the strongest predictor of their children¡¯s own smartphone dependency, was contolled, the mothers¡¯ parenting self-efficacy of communication, overprotection¡¤ permissiveness, and limit setting were significant predictors of children¡¯s smartphone dependency. The results of this study imply the importance of parenting in preventing children from developing smartphone dependency.
